Today we are going to focus on how much money you are spending on food. Do you know how much you spend on groceries? Do you add up each month how much you spend eating out? Just make a quick mental estimate of how much you spend, and then track how much you’ve spent so far for this month of May. How far off or close are you to what you estimated? Today is only May 23, and so do you have any money left over in your estimate for 8 more days this month?
Sometimes we aren’t budgeting because we think we have to budget for every category before we can get started. But, our grocery spending and eating out expenses are usually the category that is most out of control. Let’s just take a closer look at that today, and then you can see how well you are doing.
Then, if you identify a problem, you can start to brainstorm about solutions. Maybe you can try to replace just a few meals a week where you’ve been eating out with a fancier home cooked meal. Or, maybe try paying cash (or a debit card) for your groceries and dining out, and see how much you are saving. Remember steps, even small steps, done consistently make a HUGE difference in the long run. Happy eating money smart!
